Former Ugandan minister Musa Ecweru gave retired General Peter Elwelu 24 hours to surrender to the authorities or face a manhunt by security forces. At a press conference in Soroti, Ecweru urged Elwelu to abandon any plans to destabilise the country, according to the Daily Monitor.
Former Ugandan Minister of Public Works Musa Ecweru gave retired Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu 24 hours to surrender to the authorities, threatening to have security forces hunt him down and kill him if he refused. He issued the ultimatum at a press conference in Soroti, the Daily Monitor reports.
Musa Ecweru, a former commander of the Arrow Boys and outgoing MP for Amuria County, warned that any attempt at rebellion or destabilisation in the Teso sub-region would be put down by force. He called on Peter Elwelu, the former deputy chief of defence forces, to immediately abandon any alleged subversive plans.
Ecweru advised Elwelu that, if he feared mistreatment by law enforcement, he should present himself to Soroti Catholic Bishop Joseph Oliach Eciru or Vice-President Jessica Alupo. They could facilitate a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni so that Elwelu could ask him for a pardon.
The ultimatum comes after Peter Elwelu was demoted to the rank of private by Muhoozi Kainerugaba, head of Uganda’s armed forces, on 27 October. Peter Elwelu’s demotion was followed by the arrest of more than 20 former soldiers linked to him, also reported on 27 October.
