Dr Jamirah Namusoke, Uganda's first female orthopaedic surgeon and a consultant at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, has died after suffering from kidney disease, the hospital management announced on Friday. The hospital praised her work with patients and her role in training healthcare professionals, reports Daily Monitor.

Her death comes about ten months after a campaign by supporters to raise 200 million Ugandan shillings to fund a kidney transplant, reports Daily Monitor. Dr Namusoke had notably helped rescue and treat Samuel Leeds, a British tourist who was seriously injured in an accident on the Nile.

After being treated by the surgeon, Samuel Leeds contributed to the construction of an orthopaedic ward at Jinja hospital that bears his name, the Samuel Leeds Ward, according to the institution cited by Daily Monitor. In a message posted on social media, he paid tribute to the doctor, whom he described as one of the orthopaedic surgeons who helped save his life.
