Lango scored 87.1% in Uganda's national health performance rankings for the 2025-2026 financial year, compared with 24.7% a year earlier, according to the Daily Monitor. The rankings were announced on Thursday 5 November during the joint health sector review mission held at Speke Resort in Munyonyo.
Lira City, one of the local government authorities in the Lango region, ranked second among Ugandan cities, behind Mbarara City, while Oyam District achieved the best result among local governments in the sub-region, according to the Daily Monitor. Lango includes Oyam, Lira, Alebtong, Otuke, Apac, Kwania, Amolatar, Dokolo and Kole, as well as Lira City.
Dr Andrew Odur, senior executive consultant at Lira Regional Referral Hospital, attributes the improvement to coordination between the hospital and local governments, as well as the role of administrative and political leaders in monitoring health services. He also highlights the work of health workers and improvements in the management and documentation of data submitted to the Ministry of Health, according to the Daily Monitor.
The region was compared with 13 other Ugandan sub-regions, including Buganda, Busoga, West Nile, Ankole, Tooro, Bunyoro, Teso, Bukedi, Elgon, Acholi, Kampala, Kigezi and Karamoja, according to the Daily Monitor.
The announcement follows the publication on 6 November of Uganda's economic ambitions to build a $500 billion economy by 2040. It also comes amid a situation in which authorities in Apac State had faced a blockade of roadworks on 10 October.
