The lawyer for the family of Olof João Gomes Sambú, who died on 27 September in Guinea-Bissau, called on Friday 6 November for the state to speed up the investigation into the circumstances of his death and identify those responsible, O Democrata reported. Suleimane Cassamá was speaking after the victim’s relatives were questioned by the public prosecutor’s office.
The family had been summoned to give evidence as part of the ongoing proceedings. According to Suleimane Cassamá, the questioning shows that the investigation is continuing and is an encouraging development for the relatives, who want the circumstances of the death to be established and those responsible to be prosecuted.
Olof João Gomes Sambú was attacked by a crowd in the Chapa de Bissau area after false information circulated accusing him of being involved in an alleged child abduction attempt. The National Guard later said he was not a member of its forces, but a civilian official with the Directorate-General of Customs, where he headed the Anti-Fraud and Inspection unit at the Gabú delegation, according to O Democrata.
The Directorate of Police Information and Criminal Investigation (DIPIC) is responsible for establishing the circumstances of the death, identifying those responsible and facilitating their criminal prosecution, according to the National Guard. On 28 September, the LGDH had already called for an investigation after the lynching of Olof João Gomes Sambú.
