Nigerians criticised President Bola Tinubu after a federal court invalidated Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy for the 2027 presidential election. Justice Peter Lifu also annulled the African Democratic Congress leadership, weakening the party months before the poll, Daily Post Nigeria reports.

Nigerians accused President Bola Tinubu of targeting the opposition after the invalidation of Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy for the 2027 presidential election. Their reactions were posted on social media after Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja annulled Atiku’s nomination by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Several internet users asked Bola Tinubu to “let the opposition breathe” and accused the ruling APC of using the courts against its opponents. Others said Atiku should withdraw or that opposition parties should unite behind Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate.

Justice Peter Lifu’s decision also annulled the ADC bodies led by David Mark. The judge concluded that the interim committee behind Atiku’s nomination was illegal, following a case brought by Nafiu Bala Gombe. Atiku, whose name had already been published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had chosen Rotimi Amaechi, former governor of Rivers State, as his running mate.

The reactions follow the Nigerian court’s decision to invalidate Atiku’s candidacy, announced on 5 November, less than three months before the election according to messages posted on social media.
