Morocco's date production is expected to reach about 180,000 tonnes during the 2026-2027 agricultural season, Agriculture Minister Khalid Hatimy announced in Erfoud on Wednesday, according to Libération. The 15th edition of the International Date Fair in Morocco (SIDATTES 2026) opened on this occasion in Errachidia province.
Domestic consumption stands at between 220,000 and 250,000 tonnes a year, the minister said, calling for local production to be developed and imports regulated. The Agriculture Ministry estimates the value added of the sector at more than 3 billion dirhams. It represents more than 3.4 million working days a year and can provide up to 60% of the agricultural income of oasis households.
Nearly 2 million Moroccans derive income directly or indirectly from this activity, according to the ministry. The authorities are seeking in particular to strengthen storage and processing capacity, regulate prices and help farmers access international markets.
The sector also helps limit rural exodus and desertification. Its development follows on from the Green Morocco Plan and the Generation Green 2020-2030 strategy. The announcement comes two days after Morocco presented its priorities for agricultural innovation and food sovereignty as part of the Morocco's agricultural innovation strategy.
