More than 200 Urhobo and Itsekiri residents of Warri South demonstrated in Asaba against disputed changes to electoral constituency boundaries. They accuse Nigeria's electoral commission of introducing unknown ward names and altering local representation, according to the Daily Post Nigeria.
More than 200 Urhobo and Itsekiri residents of the Warri South Local Government Area in Nigeria's Delta State demonstrated outside the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Asaba to challenge the delineation of electoral constituencies, reports the Daily Post. They accuse the commission of introducing unfamiliar constituency names and changing the existing electoral structure, potentially reducing the Urhobo's political representation.
Urhobo representative Eforele Marcus says some constituencies do not correspond to any known locality in the Warri South communities and also disputes the creation of new polling units. The demonstrators are calling on INEC to restore an electoral organisation they consider fair, while Meyiwa, an Itsekiri representative, says the mobilisation is not intended to pit ethnic groups against each other but to enforce an agreement between stakeholders.
The demonstration follows accusations of fictitious polling units in Warri made on 30 October. It is also part of a series of demands for explanations over anomalies in the electoral register, including those reported on 4 November concerning fictitious polling units in Nigeria.
