Thirty earthmoving machines have arrived in Bong County, Liberia, to improve links between farms and markets. Liberia Environmental Protection Agency director Emmanuel King Urey Yarkpawolo believes the work could support food security and rural incomes, Front Page Africa reports.
The Republic of Liberia has received 30 pieces of heavy earthmoving equipment in Bong County to improve roads linking farming areas to markets. The executive director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Emmanuel King Urey Yarkpawolo, believes the equipment can reduce farmers’ isolation and support agricultural incomes, Front Page Africa reports.
Farmers in Bong produce rice, cassava, vegetables and plantains, among other crops, but poor road conditions make it difficult to transport harvests. During the rainy season, mud, damaged roads and broken crossings can cut villages off from markets and lead to the loss of perishable goods, according to Emmanuel King Urey Yarkpawolo.
The EPA chief also noted that transport difficulties affect women traders and push up food prices in towns. He praised President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, whose government programme places road infrastructure at the centre of public policy, according to Front Page Africa.
