Lapid says Netanyahu is harming Israel after US vote

Former Israeli Prime Minister Yaïr Lapid says Benjamin Netanyahu can no longer remain in power after the Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections. He accuses him of weakening Israel’s security, democracy and ties with Washington, while Yaïr Golan says his image has become toxic, reports Tribune Online.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Yaïr Lapid said that Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, could no longer remain in power after the Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections on 3 November. “This endangers our security, compromises our democracy and will ruin our reputation on the world stage,” Lapid wrote on social media, reports Tribune Online.

Lapid also accused Netanyahu of abandoning Israel’s bipartisan tradition in Washington by openly aligning himself with the Republicans. Opposition MP Yaïr Golan, for his part, said that the prime minister had become increasingly unpopular among US political leaders and warned that keeping his government in power could expose Israel to sanctions, diplomatic isolation and a confrontation with the United States.

The criticism comes after the Democrats’ victory in both chambers of the US Congress, which could complicate Washington’s military and diplomatic support for Israel. It comes amid Donald Trump’s defeat and the certification of the results of Israel’s legislative elections, in which Netanyahu’s bloc won 53 of the 120 seats, compared with 48 for the opposition and 19 for Arab parties.
