Chuck Schumer threatens to cut funding for war in Iran

The leader of the Democrats in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, is calling on Donald Trump to end the war against Iran and threatening to use Congress’s budgetary power. The Democrats, who won the midterm elections, will not take up their majority until January 2027, reports AIB.

The leader of the Democrats in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, threatened on 4 November 2026 to deprive the Pentagon of funding to force Donald Trump’s administration to end the war against Iran. “This war must end as soon as possible,” the New York senator said at a press conference, according to the Burkina Faso Information Agency (AIB).

Chuck Schumer said the American people did not know why the United States was fighting in Iran and criticised Donald Trump for regularly changing his position. He referred to using Congress’s budgetary power, which the Democrats will control in both the Senate and the House of Representatives after their victory in the midterm elections.

The newly elected lawmakers will not, however, begin their terms until January 2027. Vice-President J. D. Vance also attributed the Republican defeat to the war, while Donald Trump acknowledged that it had contributed to the short-term rise in petrol prices. The US president nevertheless said he would relaunch the operation if he had to make the same decision again, in order to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, according to AIB.

Chuck Schumer’s statement came after the Democrats took both chambers of Congress, announced on 4 November, and as Donald Trump had accepted the Republican defeat on the same day.
