The International Contact Group (ICG) for the Great Lakes region has condemned the use of violence by the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), led by former Congolese president Joseph Kabila. In a joint statement published on Friday 30 October, its members called on political actors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to prioritise dialogue and respect the constitutional order, Actualite.cd reports.

The ICG brings together Germany, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, the United States, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland and the European Union. It says political differences and grievances cannot be resolved by military means and calls for fundamental rights to be protected and the rule of law respected.

The group reiterated its support for the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the DRC. It considers peaceful and inclusive inter-Congolese dialogue involving key stakeholders essential to lasting peace.

The statement is part of a series of calls for dialogue in the DRC, following Archbishop Fridolin Ambongo’s call on 28 October for inclusive dialogue for peace. On 30 October, the ICG also condemned FRN violence in a statement reported by ten countries.
