Heavy rains flooded several streets and homes in the Congo ya Sika and Mapathi districts of Kasindi-Lubirigha, in Beni territory, North Kivu. Schools closed and traffic and commercial activities were disrupted, while civil society called for work on the rainwater drainage channel to be accelerated, according to local sources.
Heavy rains caused flooding on Thursday 29 October in the Congo ya Sika and Mapathi districts of Kasindi-Lubirigha, in Beni territory, North Kivu, leading to the closure of some schools, local sources cited by Mediacongo reported. Run-off water flooded streets, homes and several routes in the border town, located about 90 kilometres from Beni.
The movement of residents, motorcyclists and traders was severely disrupted. From the morning onwards, several families moved their belongings to protect them, while affected schools were unable to hold classes, according to Mediacongo.
Kasindi-Lubirigha civil society is calling on the authorities to speed up construction of a large drainage channel intended to carry rainwater to the Lubirigha River. The project, scheduled to take six months, is behind schedule, with technical officials attributing the delays to weather conditions and logistical constraints while saying that work is continuing.
