A drone strike on a position of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Masango, Mwenga territory, killed more than seven soldiers from the special ‘Hiboux’ group. Fighting between these forces and Joseph Kabila’s Front for the Refoundation of the Nation is intensifying in South Kivu, reports Umuseke.

A drone strike on a position held by the Hiboux, a special unit of the Congolese army, killed more than seven soldiers in Masango, in Mwenga territory, South Kivu, reports Rwandan media outlet Umuseke. Soldiers fled after the attack, according to information from the region cited by the outlet.

Images shared on social media show soldiers’ bodies and survivors asking the headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) to send them reinforcements. The fighting pits government forces against the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), the armed movement of Joseph Kabila.

The FRN has reportedly taken control of several localities, including Kuwamabuge, Rugezi, Gihuha, Gipimo, Kabanju and Biziba. The clashes also led Burundian soldiers, FDLR and Wazalendo fighters, as well as Chinese miners, to flee towards Milimba and Gasiro, according to Umuseke.

On 30 October, the arrival of 642 soldiers in the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation was also reported. Fighting between the FRN and government forces was reported in Kaziba on 23 October 2026.
