Siguiri’s acting governor, Colonel Fadjimba Mara, has suspended all artisanal gold-mining activities in the Guinean region until further notice. The measure aims to limit water pollution, environmental damage and security risks, while local authorities and security forces are to enforce it, according to Guinéenews.
The acting governor of the administrative region of Siguiri, Colonel Fadjimba Mara, has suspended all artisanal gold-mining activities until the situation is regularised. The measure, announced on Thursday 29 October 2026 in communiqué No. 212/MATD/RAS/PS/2026, aims to combat environmental degradation, the destruction of ecosystems and pollution of waterways, according to Guinéenews.
The regional authorities notably condemned the use of machinery likely to cause significant environmental damage in several gold-mining areas. Prefects, sub-prefects, district presidents and officials from the defence and security forces must ensure that the suspension is enforced on the ground, according to the governor’s office communiqué.
The decision is also intended to protect the safety of local populations and social peace in the areas concerned. Colonel Fadjimba Mara called on residents to show understanding and responsibility in response to the measure, according to Guinéenews.
