Collins Letsoalo, former director-general of South Africa’s Road Accident Fund, faces sequestration proceedings over a legal-fee debt of 1,059,736.11 rand. Motalane Attorneys says he acknowledged the debt while stating that he was experiencing financial difficulties, according to TimesLIVE.
Former Road Accident Fund (RAF) director-general Collins Letsoalo, the South African body that compensates road accident victims, is facing sequestration proceedings against his estate over an unpaid legal bill of 1,059,736.11 rand. Motalane Attorneys has approached the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, claiming that Letsoalo acknowledged the debt but said he was experiencing financial difficulties, reports TimesLIVE.
In an affidavit filed on 16 October, lawyer Emmanuel Mojalefa Motalane says Letsoalo instructed his firm in May 2025 on a matter linked to the RAF. The two parties allegedly agreed to fees of 3,000 rand per hour, in addition to expenses incurred. The firm allegedly provided its services from May to December 2025, and the bill had reached the amount claimed by the end of that period.
Motalane says several payment requests sent between January and October 2026 went unanswered. He cites a message that Letsoalo allegedly sent on 4 October, in which the former executive said he had no money and had had to make arrangements to pay school fees. The firm sent a letter of demand on 6 October, giving him five days to settle the bill.
The sequestration application adds to the South African legal cases followed in recent days, including proceedings against former adviser Ismail Cassimjee, who was tried over alleged fraud involving 1.5 million rand on 14 October.
