She acknowledged weaknesses in municipal systems and said disciplinary proceedings could follow, according to TimesLIVE.

The City of Tshwane has opened an internal investigation after the Bronkhorstspruit water plant operated without chlorine for three weeks, exposing residents to potentially dangerous water, according to TimesLIVE. The mayor explained that the supplier had withheld the ordered stocks because of a dispute over a price increase.

The mayor acknowledged that the municipality’s systems were weak and that officials had only informed her of the situation the previous week. She ordered an internal investigation that could lead to disciplinary proceedings, while rejecting calls for her resignation.

The municipality is also seeking to provide drinking water to residents of Bronkhorstspruit while the plant is restored. The crisis has already made more than 500 people ill, with children particularly affected, according to the latest figures on those sick in Tshwane.
