Two South African police officers have been found guilty of murdering Nathaniel Julies, a 16-year-old shot dead in August 2020, by the Gauteng High Court in Palm Ridge, TimesLIVE reports. Constable Caylene Whiteboy and Sergeant Simon Ndyalvane were convicted of murder at the hearing held on Friday 23 October.

Whiteboy, who fired the fatal shot using shotgun ammunition, was also found guilty of obstructing the course of justice. Ndyalvane was found guilty of unlawful possession of ammunition, obstructing the course of justice and perjury. Investigator Voster Netshiongolo was convicted of unlawful possession of ammunition and perjury, but acquitted of the charge of being an accessory after the murder.

The court found, among other things, that ammunition had been planted at the scene and that a version blaming unknown people for an exchange of gunfire had been fabricated. The three accused remain free on bail and must return to court on 11 November for sentencing. The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the development as a step towards accountability for the teenager’s death.
