Champions League: Orlando Pirates beat African Stars 5-0

Orlando Pirates reached the Champions League group stage after thrashing African Stars 5-0 in the second leg, making it 5-0 on aggregate. The South African club will be its country’s sole representative at this stage, according to TimesLIVE.

Orlando Pirates, a South African top-flight club, qualified on Friday for the group stage of the African Champions League by beating Namibian club African Stars 5-0 on aggregate in the preliminary round, reports TimesLIVE. Pirates will be South Africa’s only representative at this stage of the competition.

After their 1-0 win in the first leg, played last Saturday in Gaborone, Botswana, Orlando Pirates’ players made the difference in the return leg at Orlando Amstel Arena. Thapelo Mokobodi and Evidence Makgopa scored before half-time, then Mpho Phadime scored his first goal with his first touch after coming on. Makgopa completed his brace 12 minutes from time, assisted by Deon Hotto, according to TimesLIVE.

Orlando Pirates are reaching the group stage for the second consecutive season. The club were eliminated in the semi-finals of the previous edition, won by Mamelodi Sundowns. Pirates will host Milford FC, promoted to the Premier Soccer League, in the last 16 of the Carling Knockout Cup on Tuesday, before facing Kaizer Chiefs in the league on 31 October.

This qualification extends Orlando Pirates’ continental campaign after their start against African Stars, announced on 23 October. The club also lost 2-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final on 10 October, according to the report on this South African final.
