Pitso Mosimane, South Africa’s manager, has selected 38 players for an initial squad for the two Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Kenya, scheduled for next month, Businessday reports.

The coach recalled Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Thalente Mbatha, Lebohang Maboe and Luke le Roux, who were absent from the last camp. He also called up several players recognised for their recent form, including Thalasani Mbanjwa, Aiden McCarthy, Nkosikhona Radebe, Devin Titus, Boitumelo Radiopane and Nxaba Xulu. Evidence Makgopa remains absent from the squad, while Yanela Mbuthuma was not retained after being included in the previous camp, according to Businessday.

Mbokazi’s return increases competition at centre-back with Ime Okon and Olwethu Makhanya. Lebohang Maboe, left out of the last camp because of an injury, also joins a midfield featuring Teboho Mokoena, Sphephelo Sithole, Bathusi Aubaas and Brooklyn Poggenpoel, among others. The selection extends the preparations Mosimane began during South Africa’s matches against Guinea, Eritrea and Egypt, played during the previous camp.
