South African police seized about 250 kilogrammes of cocaine, valued at more than 200 million rand, at OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng. The drugs, divided into 216 blocks in five bags after a flight from São Paulo, were discovered during an operation with customs and border services, the Sunday Express reports.

About 250 kilogrammes of cocaine, valued at more than 200 million rand, were seized on Sunday at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg after a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, arrived. The drugs were concealed in five bags and divided into 216 blocks, according to South African police cited by SABC News.

The operation involved a team bringing together the SAPS, the South African Revenue Service’s customs officials and the Border Management Authority. Forensic analyses were carried out on site, while the person suspected of transporting the cocaine had not yet been found, according to a police update reported by SABC News.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola praised the coordination between the services responsible for border and airport control. The seizure came after his call for cooperation within the South African police on 19 October, amid a reorganisation of the SAPS.
