Famous Brands plans to open several restaurants in Kenya over the next six months and is negotiating a licence in Ghana. The South African group, which operates more than 3,070 outlets in 21 markets, wants to accelerate its African expansion after withdrawing from the Middle East, chief executive Darren Hele told TimesLIVE.

Famous Brands, the South African restaurant group operating more than 3,070 restaurants across 21 markets, plans to open several outlets in Kenya over the next six months and is negotiating a franchise agreement in Ghana. Its chief executive, Darren Hele, described the two countries as priority markets for the group’s next phase of African expansion, TimesLIVE reports.

Famous Brands already operates the Steers, Debonairs Pizza and Mugg & Bean brands in Kenya, but considers its presence there limited. In Ghana, the group is discussing a licensing agreement that could allow it to enter one of West Africa’s main consumer markets, according to Darren Hele.

The group also plans to open about 80 restaurants in the second half of its financial year. It is investing in drive-through restaurants and its Munch digital platform, designed to facilitate orders and payments. This strategy is being pursued despite pressure on South African consumers from fuel costs and difficulties with purchasing power.
