The principal of Khangela Primary School in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province has been suspended with immediate effect following his arrest over the alleged sexual assault of an 11-year-old Grade 6 pupil. The Mpumalanga provincial Department of Education confirmed the measure on Thursday.
The precautionary suspension is intended to protect the investigation and pupils, and ensure continuity of classes, according to the department. The school’s management team and governing body have been informed, while an acting principal is being appointed.
The department announced an internal investigation and a referral to the South African Council for Educators. It also promised psychological and social support for the pupil, her family, classmates and the teachers concerned, with the assistance of inclusive education services.
The authorities have called on the public not to circulate the minor’s name, photographs or any information that could identify her, in accordance with South African laws on child protection and sexual offences. The department said any employee found guilty would face disciplinary and criminal proceedings, reports TimesLIVE.
