Thousands of people demonstrated in Tel Aviv on Saturday against the Israeli government, three days before the 27 October legislative elections, according to Agence France-Presse. The rally, organised by the October Council, a group of families of victims and hostages of the Palestinian Hamas attack on 7 October 2023, called for an inquiry commission into the security failures that allowed the attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has so far refused to establish such a commission, while leading opposition figures have promised to create one if they win. The latest permitted polls give Netanyahu’s bloc 50 seats and the centrist bloc around Gadi Eisenkot 52, well short of the 61 seats needed for a majority in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament. Eisenkot, a former chief of staff who has criticised the conduct of the war in Gaza, was expected to attend the rally, according to the organisers.
The demonstration headed towards Hostages Square, where rallies calling for the return of those abducted by Hamas have been held since the start of the war. The organisers described the event as the culmination of three years of mobilisation to establish responsibility.
The rally came in the final stretch of the campaign, after Benjamin Netanyahu promised a major operation and more settlements on 23 October, and as the 27 October election is set to determine his political future, already discussed in Netanyahu stakes political future on 27 October Israeli election.
