Clashes between armed youths from the Manuer and Lith sections of the Pakam community killed five people and wounded 12 in Rumbek North County, Lakes State, South Sudan. The fighting began on Wednesday, according to William Koji Kirjok, caretaker Minister of Information and Communication of Lakes State, cited by Radio Tamazuj. A primary healthcare unit was burned and several thatched houses were set on fire.

The Lakes State government and the Rumbek North County commissioner deployed security forces to the area to prevent further escalation and a resumption of the clashes, William Koji Kirjok said. Most of the wounded were taken to the state hospital in Rumbek, while others were still on their way to receive treatment.

The official called on intellectuals and political leaders in Rumbek North to engage in dialogue with Pakam communities to create a peaceful environment ahead of the elections. Daniel Laat Kon, of the Civil Society Organisations Network, condemned the renewed clashes and called for the deployment of additional forces. He believes complete disarmament is necessary for general elections to be held in Lakes State.
