By , based on Ang

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says Lula’s victory in Brazil confirms democracy and multilateralism. Emmanuel Macron, Pedro Sánchez and Narendra Modi also hailed his re-election and called for stronger partnerships with Brasilia, according to Ang.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has hailed Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s re-election as Brazil’s president, saying that “democracy and multilateralism have won”, reports the media outlet Ang. French President Emmanuel Macron called for stronger friendship between France and Brazil, while Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the victory as the beginning of a new progressive momentum.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Lula and said he wanted to deepen the strategic partnership between India and Brazil. China also said it was ready to expand its cooperation with Brasilia. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel also hailed the victory, reports Ang.

The international reactions follow Lula’s re-election, which the media outlet places in a context where several Latin American countries have recently seen the right make gains. In Brazil, Flávio Bolsonaro, the conservative candidate who came ahead of Lula in the first round, abandoned his challenge to the result on 27 October, according to an article published by our media outlet.
