The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and the Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria are calling for restraint after the Borno State High Court sentenced Lami Samuel Dawa to 14 years in prison. The two organisations say the circumstances of the case are more complex than the accounts being circulated, Saturday PUNCH reports.
The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and the Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria have urged Nigerians, particularly Christians, to exercise caution after Lami Samuel Dawa was sentenced to 14 years in prison in Borno State, Punch reports. The Christian woman was convicted of preaching to a young Muslim woman who reportedly converted to Christianity.
The national secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Bishop David Bakare, said that information circulating about the case did not accurately reflect its circumstances. He urged those speaking about it to examine the judicial process and avoid inflammatory remarks. The organisation is following the case and welcomed the fact that an appeal had been lodged.
Ephraim Yidawi, head of the Maiduguri branch of the Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria, also called on Christians to remain calm and not spread unverified accounts. The Borno State High Court handed down the sentence under Section 210 of the state’s penal code.
