Chadian Health Minister Abdelmadjid Abderahim explained that free healthcare mainly covers emergencies and the critical period of treatment, after a system initially extended to 48 diseases. This refocusing resulted in particular from economic difficulties linked to the 2014-2016 crisis, according to Alwihda Info.

Chadian Minister of Public Health Dr Abdelmadjid Abderahim said on Friday 6 November 2026 that free healthcare mainly covers emergency situations and the critical period of treatment. Continuity of care after this phase falls to families, in accordance with Chad's cost-recovery policy, he told senators.

The system was introduced in 2007 in Kyabé by the late Marshal Idriss Déby Itno before being extended nationwide to initially cover 48 diseases, according to the minister. Economic difficulties linked to the 2014-2016 crisis, notably the fall in oil prices, subsequently led the authorities to adjust its terms.

The current scope is defined by a consensus document approved by the nation's representatives, Dr Abdelmadjid Abderahim said. The minister also defended the remuneration of healthcare professionals as senators discussed the difficulties facing Chad's health system and the response to dengue.
