Cabo Verde has inaugurated a national centre in Praia to detect risks and coordinate responses to crises, in the presence of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission. The ninth such facility in the region is attached to the Office of the Prime Minister and forms part of the regional mechanism launched in 2014, according to ECOWAS.
Cabo Verde inaugurated its ninth National Early Warning Centre in Praia on 30 October, with the aim of strengthening the detection of and response to threats affecting public safety, according to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The ceremony was organised with Cabo Verde’s Ministry of National Defence.
Attached to the Office of the Prime Minister, the centre is intended to facilitate cooperation between institutions, the analysis of information and the launch of coordinated responses to crises, according to ECOWAS. It is part of the regional process launched after the adoption of an additional act on early warning mechanisms in July 2014.
ECOWAS Commission President Birame Diop stressed that early warning should make it possible to detect risks, inform decisions and trigger a rapid response. Cabo Verde’s Minister of National Defence, Manuel da Rosa, described the centre as a tool to strengthen institutions and the state’s ability to anticipate crises.
