Cape Verdean minister Adélsia Almeida says she wants to speed up the regularisation of immigrants and strengthen their social inclusion, including through better coordination among institutions. She set out these priorities in Praia at the ordinary meeting of the National Immigration Council, according to the ANG news agency.

The Cape Verdean government wants to speed up the regularisation of immigrants and strengthen their social inclusion, Family, Inclusion, Social Development and Labour Minister Adélsia Almeida said in Praia, the ANG news agency reports. She called for faster legal procedures and better coordination between institutions.

The minister said many immigrants are seeking to regularise their status, but that the process takes a long time. She also stressed that registration with the National Institute of Social Welfare is not enough if contributions are not maintained: interruptions limit access to social benefits and pensions.

According to Adélsia Almeida, only 26% of immigrant women are registered with the social security system. She linked this situation to the prevalence of informal employment and advocated a transition to the formal economy. Cape Verde needs foreign workers in tourism, agriculture and construction, she added, while calling for arrivals to be regulated to prevent human trafficking and labour exploitation.

The minister also cited the integration of immigrant children into schools, particularly in view of language barriers, as a priority. A body bringing together several ministries, institutions and civil society organisations is being prepared.
