Cape Verdean Agriculture Minister Eveline Ramos has announced the construction of a post-harvest centre in João Galego, on Boa Vista island, to improve the preservation and hygiene of agricultural produce. The government is also examining transport and fuel costs and wants to speed up product certification to facilitate sales to hotels, Anacao reports.
The Cape Verde government will build a post-harvest centre in João Galego, in the northern part of Boa Vista island, Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Minister Eveline Ramos announced on Monday 19 October. The project will be carried out with the municipality of Boa Vista to improve the preservation and hygiene of agricultural produce, the Inforpress news agency reports.
The minister also said her government was working with the Ministry of Industry to accelerate certification of local products. This is intended to enable farmers to meet health requirements and resume selling directly to the island’s hotels.
Farmers and livestock breeders have denounced the rise in maritime transport costs: freight per sack has gone up from 300 to 900 escudos. They have also reported that there is no petrol station in the area, forcing them to make a 60-kilometre round trip to Sal Rei to refuel their vehicles and motorised pumps.
Eveline Ramos promised to refer the transport issue to the relevant ministry and consult oil companies about the possibility of setting up a closer fuel point. Boa Vista mayor Cláudio Mendonça said these measures and certification could help diversify the island’s economy and bring agriculture and tourism closer together.
