The Botswana government is preparing a reform of the ownership and management of state-owned enterprises, amid tighter public finances and efforts to accelerate economic diversification. The proposed state-owned enterprise ownership policy aims to make the state a more strategic owner, The Voice Botswana reports.
The reform could open the way to more partnerships with the private sector and the restructuring of some enterprises. According to the Public Enterprises Evaluation and Privatisation Agency (PEEPA), only five state-owned enterprises are consistently profitable. Vice-President Ndaba Gaolathe has called for greater performance, discipline and accountability in their management.
