Botswana MPs call for pay rise

MPs from the ruling Umbrella for Democratic Change are demanding higher pay, putting Botswana President Duma Boko’s austerity policy to the test. The request comes as the government seeks to contain public spending, the Sunday Standard reports.
Botswana’s ruling Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) MPs are preparing a request for higher salaries and allowances, the Sunday Standard reports. They intend to submit a formal proposal to Vice-President and Finance Minister Ndaba Gaolathe before November.
The MPs justify their move by pointing to Botswana’s economic rebound in 2026. Their request could nevertheless undermine President Duma Boko’s austerity programme, according to the Sunday Standard.
Ndaba Gaolathe is also advocating a strategy to diversify Botswana’s economy. The Vice-President Ndaba Gaolathe set out this approach as part of the government’s efforts to broaden the country’s sources of growth.
