The Beninese Agency for Medicines and Other Health Products has ordered all batches of TOCFIM, a paediatric cefixime antibiotic, to be quarantined. Facilities must remove and isolate the bottles while investigations into their quality are conducted, reports La Nouvelle Tribune.
The Beninese Agency for Medicines and Other Health Products (ABMed) has ordered the quarantine of all batches of TOCFIM, an oral suspension of cefixime at 100 mg/5 mL in a 60 mL bottle, marketed by Acton Pharma Pvt. Ltd. The emergency measure is intended to allow investigations into the quality of the medicine, according to ABMed.
The agency has asked pharmaceutical establishments and health facilities to immediately remove the bottles from their shelves and isolate them pending expert assessments. The decision extends an initial recall issued on 16 June, which concerned only one batch.
TOCFIM is an antibiotic in powder form to be reconstituted, mainly prescribed to children over six months old for certain infections, including ear infections, bronchial and lung infections, and urinary tract infections. Cefixime is available by prescription; its dosage must be determined by a health professional according to the child’s weight and clinical condition.
