Kenya’s Parliament has passed a bill requiring the electoral commission to electronically transmit presidential results to tallying centres within two hours of their declaration. The measure also provides for the online publication of results forms, but removes the requirement to livestream announcements, Kenyans reports.
Kenya’s National Assembly has adopted a bill requiring the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to electronically transmit presidential election results within two hours of their declaration at polling stations. The bill also provides for the publication of polling-station results forms on the IEBC’s online portal, according to Kenyans.
The commission will have to justify any delay in a prescribed format and verify the published figures against those declared at each polling station. Results will also be physically sent to constituency tallying centres and the national centre, but the bill does not set out a procedure for discrepancies between digital transmissions and paper documents.
The bill allows IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon to declare the winner before results from all constituencies have been received if the missing figures cannot change the outcome of the election. It also removes the requirement to livestream announcements from polling stations, a measure already reported in the removal of livestreaming of election results, ahead of the 2027 general election.
