Suleiman Rotimi, president of the Nigerian Medical Association in Kwara State, urges residents to follow preventive measures against Ebola, including handwashing and wearing masks. His appeal comes after a first case was confirmed in the Federal Capital Territory, in Abuja, Leadership reports.
The chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kwara State, Dr Suleiman Rotimi, has called on residents to apply the preventive measures used during the Covid-19 pandemic to prevent Ebola from entering the state. He made the appeal after the confirmation of a first case in the Federal Capital Territory, in Abuja, according to the Leadership newspaper.
Rotimi recommends frequent handwashing, wearing masks and physical distancing, as well as increased vigilance for suspicious symptoms. He also asked services at entry points into Kwara, a border state, to strengthen monitoring of travellers from countries where cases have been confirmed. The Federal Ministry of Health, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and Kwara health authorities have already begun combating the disease, he said.
The recommendation comes after 44 contacts linked to the Ebola patient were identified on 20 October, as part of the international mobilisation against Ebola in Nigeria. It also follows calls made on 22 October to strengthen African preparedness and screening in Nigerian hospitals, particularly in Nigerian hospitals urged to strengthen screening.
