Audi South Africa is launching the RS 5, the German brand's first high-performance plug-in hybrid RS production model. Available as a saloon and estate, it combines a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine with an electric motor for 470 kW and 825 Nm, according to Audi.

The new Audi RS 5 combines a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 470 kW and 825 Nm of torque. Audi South Africa offers the model in Sedan and Avant versions, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and an electric range of between 78 and 84 km, according to IOL.

The lithium-ion battery has a usable capacity of 22 kWh and accepts AC charging of up to 11 kW. The RS 5 can operate in electric or hybrid mode, while a boost function provides maximum acceleration for ten seconds, Audi said.

The model has an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive. Audi also presents its rear torque-vectoring system as the first electromechanical system of its kind installed in a production vehicle, with torque distributed between the rear wheels to improve agility and stability when cornering.
