Kenyan police are searching for the owner and contractor linked to a building collapse in Nairobi, where 31 people remain missing. Investigators are checking for possible negligence, defective work or breaches of building standards, while rescue teams continue searching the rubble, according to spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.
Thirty-one people are missing after a multi-storey building collapsed on Friday in the Eastleigh neighbourhood of Nairobi, according to Capital FM. Rescue teams are continuing to search the rubble with excavators and specialised equipment.
Kenyan police are searching for the building’s owner and the contractor responsible for its construction, said its spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga. The investigation must determine whether negligence, structural defects or breaches of building regulations contributed to the collapse; those found responsible could face prosecution.
The operation involves the National Police Service, the Kenya Defence Forces, the Kenya Red Cross and Nairobi County emergency teams. The Red Cross has opened a family assistance service on 1199, while the authorities are asking the public to avoid Yusuf Haji Avenue and 9th Street. This follows the report of seven people missing after the collapse and the information about unapproved plans, published on 24 October.
