Lawrence Mavuso, stepfather of Vusi Mncina, considers the 124-year sentence handed to the former deputy sheriff for the murders of women in Ezulwini deserved. He says he never understood what led his stepson to carry out the shootings on 28 October 2023, Eswatini News reports.

Lawrence Mavuso, the stepfather of Vusi Mncina, a former deputy sheriff sentenced to 124 years in prison for killings in Ezulwini, said the sentence handed down on Wednesday was deserved. He said a 300-year sentence would not have surprised him, according to the Times of Eswatini.

Judge Titus Mlangeni sentenced Mncina to 14 years for the attempted murder of Thuli Mkhwanazi, 29 years for each of the murders of Nonhlanhla Thwala, Lungile Shongwe and Fikile Shongwe, and 23 years for the murder of Cynthia Khulile Shongwe, Mncina’s partner.

Lawrence Mavuso said he still did not understand what had driven his stepson to carry out the shootings on 28 October 2023 in Goje Township, Ezulwini. Despite several prison visits, he had received only explanations referring to demons or evil spirits, which had not resolved his questions, the Times of Eswatini reports.

The sentence was reported on 29 October in the gunman’s 124-year prison sentence. Judge Titus Mlangeni described Vusi Mncina as a manifestly dangerous person who had failed to control his anger.
