China has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with Lesotho and defended its sovereignty claim over Taiwan, according to Chinese Ambassador to Maseru Yang Xiaokun. He was speaking this week at a meeting with local media held to mark the 55th anniversary of the restoration of China’s seat at the UN.

Yang Xiaokun recalled that on 25 October 1971, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 by 76 votes to 35, with 17 abstentions. The resolution restored the rights of the People’s Republic of China at the UN and recognised its representatives as the sole legitimate representatives of China. The ambassador also called on local media to respect Beijing’s position on Taiwan.

The ambassador said China’s Global Development Initiative had mobilised more than $23 billion, supported more than 1,800 cooperation projects and enabled more than 10,000 capacity-building programmes. According to him, these programmes have trained more than 200,000 professionals from developing countries.

He also said China was fully implementing a zero-tariff regime for 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic relations.
