The presidents of both chambers of the Parliament of Lesotho welcomed parliamentarians from Eswatini at a gathering organised around sporting activities. Senate President Mamonaheng Mokitimi and National Assembly Speaker Tlohang Sekhamane described the visit as an opportunity to strengthen the bonds of friendship, solidarity and cooperation between the two kingdoms, according to the Times of Eswatini.
The programme includes men’s and women’s football matches, handball and a tug-of-war event. Mamonaheng Mokitimi stressed that the activities enabled elected representatives to build relationships outside parliamentary debates and welcomed the prominence given to women’s football, presented as a way to promote women’s participation and leadership in society.
Tlohang Sekhamane recalled that Lesotho and Eswatini are the only two sovereign monarchies in southern Africa to have retained their traditional royal institutions. He also highlighted regular consultations between the leaders of their parliaments on matters of common interest, according to the Times of Eswatini.
