Algerian video presents Moroccan monuments as Algerian

A video published by Algeria’s Defence Ministry presents the Koutoubia Mosque and Jemaa el-Fna square in Marrakech as Algerian symbols. The clip forms part of a message about Algeria’s role in Africa and has prompted mocking reactions, according to Yabiladi.
A promotional video published on 22 October 2026 by Algeria’s Defence Ministry presents the minaret of Marrakech’s Koutoubia Mosque and Jemaa el-Fna square as elements of Algerian heritage, reports Yabiladi. The clip, broadcast on the ministry’s official page on X, associates the Moroccan monuments with a narrative about Algeria’s role in Africa.
The Koutoubia minaret, built in the 12th century, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Jemaa el-Fna square has been recognised by the organisation since 2008 as intangible cultural heritage for its popular and artistic traditions, according to Yabiladi.
The video describes Algeria as a “beacon of confidence” working to “develop Africa and secure its future”. Its release by the Defence Ministry, rather than the Foreign Ministry, illustrates, according to Yabiladi, the central role of the army in Algerian political life. Images of Moroccan monuments had already prompted mockery on social media in previous Algerian promotional videos.
