Novak Djokovic was eliminated on Wednesday in the second round of the Paris Masters 1000, losing 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Australia's Rinky Hijikata, the world's 83rd-ranked player, reports Citizen Digital. The defeat means the 39-year-old Serb will not qualify for the ATP Finals, scheduled for later this month.
Djokovic, a seven-time winner of the Paris tournament and holder of 24 Grand Slam titles, won the first set before gradually losing control of the match. Hijikata levelled after breaking his opponent's serve in the eighth game of the second set, then made the difference in the deciding set by breaking Djokovic at 3-3 before closing out with a second break.
The former world number one said after the match that he planned simply to rest over the next few weeks. He acknowledged his disappointment while praising Hijikata's performance. The tournament also saw Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Frances Tiafoe and Alex de Minaur eliminated in the second round, reports Citizen Digital.
