ECOWAS and the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel want to strengthen their cooperation against terrorism, insecurity and conflicts. The two organisations plan more consultations and increased UN participation in strategic meetings, according to ECOWAS.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) want to strengthen their cooperation against terrorism, insecurity and conflicts in the region, according to the ECOWAS Commission. The commitment was reaffirmed on 3 November in Abuja during a meeting between the Commission president, General Birame Diop, and a UN delegation led by Leonardo Santos Simão, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for UNOWAS.

The two institutions plan to improve their exchanges, hold more consultations and strengthen their coordination mechanisms. They also want to maintain UNOWAS’s participation in high-level meetings and strategic discussions devoted to peace and security in West Africa and the Sahel, according to the ECOWAS Commission.

The discussions also covered irregular migration, border demarcation and water management for human consumption, livestock and agriculture. ECOWAS and the UN called for greater public awareness of conflict prevention, peacebuilding and community resilience.
