The ECOWAS Commission reviewed a guide on 30 October in Abuja, intended to clarify regional coordination in response to population displacement linked to climate change. The workshop brought together experts and partners, including German Cooperation, the Swiss development agency and the International Organization for Migration, according to the ECOWAS Commission.

The ECOWAS Commission reviewed a draft guide on managing human mobility linked to climate change at a workshop held on 30 October 2026 in Abuja, Nigeria. The document is intended to clarify institutional responsibilities, coordination mechanisms and implementation tools, according to the ECOWAS Commission.

The meeting brought together representatives of ECOWAS directorates and specialised agencies, technical experts and development partners. It was organised by the Directorates of Free Movement of Persons and Migration, and Environment and Natural Resources, with support from German Cooperation (GIZ), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the International Organization for Migration, as part of the European Union-funded programme on free movement and migration in West Africa.

The programme’s head of border management, Obinna Ajugwo, set out three objectives for the workshop: reviewing the draft, identifying institutional gaps and making practical recommendations. The meeting follows the MIDWA thematic working group on migration and climate change, part of the regional migration dialogue in West Africa, according to the Commission.
