By the AFREEQUE newsroom, based on APS

ECOWAS wants to make its regional food security reserve more responsive and sustainable through predictable funding to cover stockpiling, replenishment and emergency interventions. Its Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Dehpué Yenpea Zuo, presented the plans in Dakar at a meeting on revising the strategy adopted in 2012, reports APS.
ECOWAS wants to introduce predictable funding for its regional food security reserve to cover stockpiling, emergency interventions and replenishment, the organisation’s Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Dehpué Yenpea Zuo, said in Dakar on Tuesday. He was speaking at the third meeting of the steering committee tasked with revising the regional food storage strategy.
The review is also intended to clarify the roles of local stocks managed by producer organisations, member states’ national reserves and the regional reserve, which has been operational since 2016. Mr Zuo called for intervention criteria based on solidarity, subsidiarity and complementarity, as well as improved governance and decision-making procedures. The current strategy, adopted in 2012 under ECOWAS’s agricultural policy, needs to be adapted to the needs of people facing food, nutrition and pastoral crises, the commissioner said.
The meeting is part of the process to revise the food storage strategy, whose progress ECOWAS had already assessed on 20 October.
