Senegal wants to integrate gender equity into budget decisions, planning and the implementation of its agricultural programmes. The Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock, Cheikhou Oumar Ba, called on all his directorates and departments to turn this commitment into concrete action at a workshop held on Tuesday 20 October in Diamniadio, according to the ministry.
The meeting was organised by the ministry’s Gender and Equity Unit, with support from the Italy-Senegal Agricultural Programme. Cheikhou Oumar Ba said responsibility for this policy should not rest solely with the unit, but also with the department’s technical services, projects and programmes. He pledged to follow up on recommendations concerning budgets, training, awareness-raising and sectoral studies.
Established in 2016, the Gender Unit draws in particular on Circular No. 0989 of 5 June 2018, gender audits and action plans on land, rice, productive energy and climate. The ministry aims to address the persistent difficulties women face in accessing land, finance, equipment and economic opportunities, despite their central role in household production, processing and food security.
