Tope Ajayi, an adviser to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, says technical and logistical problems disrupted the US midterm elections. He cited equipment failures, scanner programming difficulties and a ballot shortage, while accusing Nigerian critics of further delegitimising their own elections, reports Vanguard.
Temitope Ajayi, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s special adviser for media and publicity, reported technical and logistical problems during the US midterm elections on 4 November, according to Vanguard.
In a post on X, he cited ballot-scanner programming failures in some areas of New York, an equipment breakdown in Broward County, Florida, and a shortage of ballot papers at a polling station in Kansas. One site reportedly received 100 paper ballots instead of 100,000, while 250,000 ballots had to be counted manually after a problem with a voting machine, reports Vanguard.
Ajayi said that American commentators and political officials had not discredited the electoral process despite these difficulties. He compared their reaction with criticism voiced in Nigeria after the 2023 presidential election, which was challenged by the opposition and observers because of technical and logistical problems.
