South Africa, back-to-back world champions, beat Italy 66-7 on Saturday in Turin in a Nations Championship match, leading 45-0 at half-time. The bonus-point win consolidates the Springboks' first place in the southern hemisphere standings, according to TimesLIVE.
Fly-half Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 24, scored 26 points with a perfect record off the tee, including ten successful kicks out of ten, and scored the opening try. Scrum-half Morne van den Berg was named man of the match for his kicking, his work rate and the quality of his passing. The South African forwards, led by Malcolm Marx — scorer of two tries —, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Jasper Wiese and Siya Kolisi, dominated the set piece and the collisions, the attacking bonus point for four tries being secured in twenty-five minutes.
In the second half, the Italians saved face with a try by lock Federico Ruzza, converted by Tommaso Allan, on the hour mark, after the introduction of six replacement South African forwards in the 45th minute. Wilco Louw immediately replied with a converted try, and the Springboks added two tries in the last ten minutes, including one for hooker Ethan Hooker.
The South Africans face France in Paris on Friday, before concluding their pool matches against Ireland in Dublin a week later. The tournament final will be played at Twickenham's Allianz Stadium in late November.
