Local elections: ANC loses support and major cities

The African National Congress (ANC) is on course to lose a significant share of its electoral support and control of several major South African cities, according to provisional results. Local elections were held this week, with coalitions under discussion in Tshwane, Africanews reports, citing the Associated Press.
With 76% of ballots counted, the African National Congress (ANC), South Africa's historic governing party, had secured nearly 31% of the vote and was trailing its rivals in several major cities, including Johannesburg, Tshwane and Thekwini, according to provisional results published on Friday by South African electoral authorities.
In Tshwane, Nasiphi Moya, ActionSA's mayoral candidate, said her party wanted to form coalitions with parties willing to serve all residents and fight corruption. She also said ActionSA could refuse an alliance with a party in favour of allowing undocumented foreigners to remain in the city, according to Africanews.
Local elections determine majorities in major cities and municipal districts responsible in particular for water supply, road maintenance and waste collection, according to Africanews. The campaign in Johannesburg was notably marked by coalition discussions involving the Democratic Alliance (DA), whose mayoral candidate, Helen Zille, favours an alliance with ActionSA or the ANC.
