Eswatini MP Welcome Dlamini is asking three ministries to explain how funds allocated to youth employment and empowerment have been used. He believes the high turnout for police recruitment illustrates the scale of youth unemployment, according to the Times of Eswatini.

Mbabane East MP Welcome Dlamini is asking the Eswatini government to explain how funds allocated to three ministries to promote youth employment and empowerment have been used. He made the request on 6 November during a parliamentary committee debate on the Prime Minister’s Office’s second-quarter performance reports, the Times of Eswatini reports.

Welcome Dlamini singled out the ministries of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs; Economic Planning and Development; and Agriculture. He asked acting Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla to summon their officials so that they could explain how the funds had been used and what tangible benefits had been achieved for young people.

The MP cited the large turnout at the recent police recruitment exercise as a sign of the scale of youth unemployment. He also referred to former Prime Minister Barnabas Dlamini, arguing that his leadership style would have led to the officials concerned being held to account.

The request comes after several initiatives focused on youth employment and training in Eswatini, including the Eswatini youth fund project aimed at strengthening local manufacturing, announced on 13 October, and the youth prisoner training initiative presented on 30 October.
